Ed Wool And The Nomads -Please, Please (Don't Go)

I had a busy day. The town I live in has a Pickle festival every year and the festival is down the street from my house. My wife made dog cookies and we were going to sell them in front of our house, and donate the proceeds to our church for local projects they do,as well as local disaster relief from the tornadoes.  I had to run to get my mail at the post office 20 miles away and she told me to get right home. On the way, I called a friend and he said "You have got to get to this yard sale, they've got thousands of records....bring money, lots of money." Oh crap, I had to get right back home and look what was dropping into my lap! I stopped, got money and went to the yard sale. Tons of 45's and lp's and just my friend and I and no one else..unbelievable! He already had a box full and was starting on a 2nd one! The 45's were all over the map from soul, rock, doowop, and lots and lots of country. I ended up buying 26 45's and 2 lp's but got the woman's phone number as she has much more at her house. A few of the 45's I can tell you will end up on this blog sometime in the future. I don't think I have ever looked at so many records as fast as I did. I got home and we made a measly $18 for disaster relief. But my dogs are happy cuz we have 36 bags of dog cookies left and my dogs are addicted to these things.

James Brown's birthday is next week. As a tribute, I thought we'd upload a cool garage version of one of his songs.

Terry Reid- Super Lungs

I always loved this song and particularly love the original from Donovan. If you have never listened to Terry Reid, check out Bang Bang, Terry Reid & River. Those are some brilliant albums!

Nina Simone - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

This one is for my wife. She loves Nina Simone. Not a bad cover version at all (my bad...this is the original)...Animals still rock, though!

Ok, here is the REAL Cover version!

Blue Things - La Do Da Da

Lots of rain today. Received my color vinyl box set of Flaming Lips reissues today...way cool. Yes, I know this would be more in tune to my other blog but I was psyched and needed to share.

Tonights upload is a brilliant cover version of the Dale Hawkins classic La Do Da Da.  Check out the cool rare PS and white label promo.

Nobody's Children - I Can't Let Go

So far I have received requests from one person. Come on, throw me some bones...otherwise I may have to do a week of Barry Manilow 45s (well, of course I will need to buy some first). I'm out of school for 2 weeks beginning Saturday but I just saw the syllabus for my next class starting on May 14th; I am going to need to start reading Saturday as it will be a busy busy class.  So, I will have little time to take photos and record to the computer.
Cover week continues with a cover version of the Hollies classic song

Fear Itself - The Letter

I've been working on one of my final exams all day and need a break from it. Heavy cover version of the Boxtops classic.

Truth - Sueno

Hit some shops in New Bern today but the pickens were slim. Did find a Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers 78 for a couple of bucks. I usually stay away from 78s but couldn't resist. Nice cover version of a Rascals song...maybe I'll do another week of cover versions.

Ted Taylor - Miss You So

So I was going to build some doors for my album record cabinet as right now there is cardboard taped over it to keep the cats and their claws away from the lps. It works but I can't pull out my lps to listen to them. So I went to lowes, picked out real nice high grade plywood and had it cut to size and brought it home. I started to work on it and realized the hinges I bought were too small. Guess I will be taking them back and upgrading to larger hinges. And I was so motivated to on my day off! So I am posting early as I want to work on my final test for class due next Saturday.
I almost uploaded a 45 I have planned for a future theme week...whew, that was a close one. I came up with a spreadsheet to keep track of these uploads so I don't upload one twice. Anyway, here is a killer 45 from Ted Taylor.

Sounds Unlimited - Nobody But You

I always thought this was a fantastic slice of 45. I'm amazed it is not more in demand

Muddy Waters - My Dog Cant Bark

Box of records arrived today from my parents...THANKS DAD! Lots of late 50's early 60's stuff and probably little that will make this blog. Once I'm out on break I plan to do me some listening. Here is a pretty cool Muddy Waters 45 on Chess. And don't forget to email me those requests at poppacool@gmail.com

Kit and The Outlaws- Don't Tread On Me * Request Week Ahead

I'm bumming. Was expecting a big box of 45s my parents sent me today but they did not arrive. That was pretty much a pleasant thought that kept me going all day and then bam...nothing! Well, maybe tomorrow. In the meantime, here is another killer 45 that has been uploaded before. Nice early label, before reissued on Philips.
I'm going to have a break from school here for a few weeks and thought I would do another request week. Here is the deal. Send me a list of your requests (50's-70's 45s only). If I have them, I will upload them. It will be 1st come 1st serve. Send me your requests, no matter how wacky, good, bad, or ugly.

The Move - Chinatown

Fine single from Jeff Lynne and Roy Woods outfit "The Move". This singel was withdrawn and I have read that only promo copies exist. I bought the reissue CD "Message From The Country" a few years ago which included this as a bonus track.

The Truth - P.S. (Prognosis Stegnosis)

Well I picked up some of the items I wanted at RSD and of course other items were long gone. Hopefully I can post some of them on my 2nd blog. Regarding tonights upload, I've had a few copies of this in my lifetime.

Ike and Tina Tuner - A Fool For A Fool

Ok, I'm psyched  but bummed. Tomorrow is Record Store day and unfortunately I have class. The good news is I just pre ordered the Flaming Lips box set of vinyl reissues off their site. The color vinyl versions are limited to 1000 copies and only available there. The black vinyl copies are sold in stores. I've been a huge Flips fan for over 20 years. But I'm bummed as there are other things I would like but may not be able to get due to being in class.
Let's groove to a a wonderful early Ike and Tina Turner 45 with a cool Picture Sleeve to peek at.

Norman Greenbaum - Marcy

I never know what to write and who cares anyway, we're all in it for the music anyway. Had a pretty good day today just in case you do care..lol. Never liked his "Spirit In The Sky" but I like this one.

Beau Brummels - Magic Hollow

I sure wish I had purchased the Beau Brummels CD box set on the Rhino Handmade. This is one of my favorites from them.

Ellie Greenwich - Maybe I Know

Another up and down day...rain, wind and sunshine. How about Ellie Greenwich doing a cover version of her own song. Originally was recorded by Lesley Gore

Hung Jury - Buses

Thanks to the up and down weather we have been experiencing I have another sinus infection. How about a catchy little song for Monday. This came from a nice DJ collection I bought last year

Only way I could afford a copy of this was through this recent reissue.

Friday, April 08, 2011

Wilbur Walton Jr - Twenty Four Hours Of Lonliness

Nice day here in Eastern NC unfortunately I feel like I'm coming down with the crud.

Cartoone - Mr. Poor Man

Jimmy Page was a guest on the LP but I am unsure if he played on this track. I am too tired to research it. Besides the stock copy,  I have included a picture of a test pressing I have.

The Voices Of East Harlem - Right On Be Free

Time for a little Wednesday night soul. Picked this up about 6 months ago.

Tonics - Hugger Mugger Mummery

How about a little bubblegum for this fine Tuesday evening.

Monday, April 04, 2011

Tommy Roe - A Wild Water Skiing Weekend

Tommy Roe doing an impression of Jan & Dean? Well That is what it sounds like to me, and it is one of his harder to find 45s.

Merry Go Round - Listen Listen

Hit the record show today and came away with plenty of goodies. Now if I only had the time to listen listen to them.

The Who- Mary-Anne With The Shaky Hands

The final "b" side of the week ultimately comes down to my preparation. I won't spoil future uploads but there are many good ones. This single by the Who is wonderful. And the 45 mix is in my opinion so superior to the album mix. The "a" side, I Can See For Miles I believe was the biggest hit the Who had.

Byrds - Renaissance Fair

Another group I have neglected over the past year is the Byrds. I don't understand why the 45s they put out were not huge. It seems after the controversy of Eight Miles High, they never had a big hit again. That is unfortunate for there are some wonderful gems....like this "b" side to the minor hit (#30) "My Back Pages" single.
