Brenda Lee - Is It True

Could you imagine hearing Brenda Lee singing "Whole Lotta Love" and moaning in the middle ala Robert Plant? Ok, I guess that is just plain wrong! This was recorded in England and features a young Jimmy Page playing some nice guitar. Produced by Mickie Most.

Erma Franklin- Piece Of My Heart

Sorry about last night. I have a book to read for class and it had not caught my attention. I found myself distracted so I decided to go the the local college and find a couch to sit and read on without the distractions of dogs, cats, wife, TV, and internet. Suffice it to say the book finally has started to get interesting (after 130 or so pages) and I did not turn on the computer when I came home.
Tonight we have a little soul and rock....a soul 45 and a rock video. Erma did not get enough credit for her striking original version of this song, but alas, the definitive version is from dear Janis. I had to include at least a video from JJ. Dig the dude in the tie..he is getting down!

Shangri-Las - Heaven Only Knows

Have you ever heard the Crysal's "He Hit Me (and it felt like a Kiss)? Incredibly politically incorrect even for it's day. I wonder what the producer was thinking.....oh, it was Phil Spector.....never mind. Well this is not a politically incorrect song but a classic Barry/Greenich love song that oozes with sexuality that only the Shangri Las could get away with.

Lesley Gore - Off and Running

I was thinking about doing a girls week after hearing this Lesley Gore song on Sirius/XM last week. I had completely forgotten what a great song this is and it bubbled under the top 100 so most people never heard it.
I don't know if I have enough pictures and songs ready from the ladies but I will give it a shot.
Be sure to check out Sonic Paraphernalia (my newer site) as I plan on doing a rare upload to that one shortly.

The Druids - It's A Day

Took the night off last night as I was beat tired.  I thought I would stick with the Columbia theme. This one is not so weird. One of my faves.

The Devil's Anvil - Karkadon

I always thought this was a real weird one. I mean, who at Columbia thought this would race up the charts.

U.S. Males - Come Out Of The Rain

Brilliant pop single. Why was this not huge?

Cherry Slush - I Cannot Stop You

What an awful hot day. Was given a box of 45's today but it was full of junk. Bummer. Someday maybe I will be given a box full of stuff like this. oh, yeah...a man can dream

P. F. Sloan Patterns Seg. 4 & From A Distance

I end the week on a high note with what I think is his best 45.

P.F. Sloan - A Melody For You

Wow, it is really amazing but all these bands I started listening to after college have been getting back together and releasing music...The Feelies, Eleventh Dream Day. There just is not enough money to buy this stuff! I guess I need to update my other blog with some of those bands, but in the meantime back to P.F. Sloan. I included the b side as a youtube clip to save my limited online storage space available.

P. F. Sloan - Sunflower Sunflower

How about some Sloan without Barri (but he did produce it)...Here's a nice one with the rare promo picture sleeve

Turtles - Is It Any Wonder?

Barri & Sloan songs were all over the radio and it seems everyone sang them. The Turtles enjoyed alot of success with their songs and here is one of their harder singles to find.

The Thomas Group I've Got No More To Say & Then It Begins

I continue my P.F. Sloan & Steve Barri week with the son of Danny Thomas. Seems like children of actors sure had the connections to get signed to labels. I always thought this was a catchy double sided 45. Has that Dunhill sound.

Imaginations - Summer In New York

I found many Sloan & Barri compostitions while going through my 45's. It appears that although Sloan co-wrote this song, this 45 was a complete Steve Barri deal with Sloan not performing on it.

Fantastic Baggys - Tell Em I'm Surfin

I thought I would do a little P.F. Sloan this week. Sloan & Barri could do no wrong.

Racket Squad - Hung Up

This group put out a bunch of 45's but never made it big.

Cresters - Put Your Arms Around Me

UK group that reminds me of Roy Orbison

Epic Spendor - A Little Rain Must Fall

Whew, knee deep in my school project and it is a test of endurance I can tell you that much! A little break to upload this nice sunshine pop northern soul sounding song.

Buck Owens - Close Up The Honky Tonk (Early Version)

One of the 45's I so wanted badly on RSD this year was the Buck Owen's 45. I thought I would easily be able to pick it up and it turned out to be the most difficult item for me to find (other than the Big Star reissue, which I still do not have). I have been on a Buck Owens kick lately. Over the past month, I have found at least 6 of his albums at yard sales, not to mention I have picked up about 5 or 6 original Capitol 45's with picture sleeves. And of course this reissue on yellow vinyl and limited to 1300 copies. If my parents pay attention to my postings will laugh their tails off that I have developed a fondness for old timey country

Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance & Another Sad And Lonely Night

So, yes I took the night off last night. I was focused on studies, beat, exhausted, and sleepy. I figure I need to upload something fantastic to make it up to you, my dear followers and I believe I am hitting a home run. A brilliant 45 that should have been a monster. But as much as love Let her Dance by BF4, see if you can find the punk version by the Stepmothers...it is out of this world fantastic. Oh, and I found a video as well.

Ides Of March - You Wouldn't Listen

Here is a killer 45 comped on Nuggets. Probably uploaded all over but hey, does it hurt to have it uploaded again?

The Sky - I'm Not A Fool

I had an excellent day in class today. Now time to upload this and relax with a movie. Tomorrow, I continue working on my other project due in 2 weeks.

Sound Sandwich - Apothecary Dream & Zig Zag News

It has been awhile since I did a double sided upload. This has to be one of my favorite 45s

John Walker - Annabella

I read recently that John Walker recently died...he was 67

Shirley Walton - The One You Can't Have All By Yourself

I completed a ton of paperwork today and ate lunch while working on things I needed to get completed. I really need to make sure I take time during lunch and not work..I've been doing that way too much lately. I came right home and began working on my next school project and I just realized I'm tired and a little down in the dumps. Sometimes doing all this exploration on self is emotionally draining. So it is time to kick in one of my coping mechanism, music. Yeah, I know you don't want to hear this crap so lets do the tune. I don't know what it is about soul music....well, maybe cuz it comes from the soul and soothes the soul....but it does hit the spot.
