Martha & The Vandellas - Love (Makes Me Do Foolish Things)

It was a little chilly on our walk this morning but Cooper never minds. He got to go bye bye yesterday evening with a car ride and he also got a pup cup- he was a happy dog. This was the B side and a minor hit on the charts (#70) but I liked it better than the A side. Another hard to believe I have never posted a Martha & the Vandellas before

Scorpions - In Trance

I feel very relaxed this morning. Cooper and I had a really nice walk, and now I am enjoying a nice hot cup of coffee. I have a good plan for the weekend...I have an area I am going to plant me some hot peppers and another area for tomatoes. My weekend also may involve going to look for records (of course it will).

I first heard the Scorpions when I was in High School. I remember going and buying the Breakout LP and never looked back. This was from 1975, way before they really hit it big in the States. I bought Love at First Sting and then my musical tastes changed and I never bought another newer Scorpions release. I was able to find all their 70s lp's dirt cheap back then. I have not listened to them in ages and I really should dig them out.

Fire Town - Carry The Torch

I have this affinity for jangly guitars...This should have been huge...Drummer Butch Vig later went on to greater fame as a producer for Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins as well as being in Garbage

Grace Slick - Dreams

I think Grace Slick is one of the most interesting individuals in the history of Rock and Roll. She always presented a no BS approach and her voice graces (no pun intended) some of the most iconic songs from the 60's. The list is long and I love those 60's 45s and lp's from Jefferson Airplane. While there are a few Starship songs that are fanatastic, I can pretty much dismiss the slick (ok, I'm on a roll here) production as a product of the 80's. She never had the success as a solo artist and I will admit I have heard very little of it. But this 45 has all the trademark Grace Slick vocal approach and attitude.

I also want to point out something weird regarding  my cover photo which is no missing. It was a picture of my beloved Bentley when he was about 9 months old running full blast. The picture was taken at my co-workers home while he was playing with her dog. My former co-worker died last week and the picture has disappeared. I was able to find a copy of it but I am thinking it is time for Cooper to be the poster child

Awakening Echoes - Don't Leave Me

Sometimes you strike out but that is alright. A friend called me yesterday and someone approached him at an antique mall and had 45s. I lived fairly close to the gentleman and met him at his home. He had about 100 45s he found in a suitcase. I looked through them and there was nothing outstanding at all. I asked him how much he wanted and he said "highest price you will give me plus $100"...what? I offered him $25 which was incredibly generous by the way, and he declined saying they worth more and he was going to put them in his booth at the antique mall. I wished him well but pointed out to him some of the 45s that were beyond salvage but his response was they were James Brown...yep, a new product...James Brown fresbees

I have neglected uploading my Peacock 45s lately. I rarely find a Peacock that is pristine...well loved 45s these are.

Tuneful Trolley - Sunny Days

I really want to do some record things today but first I need to work in the yard and get my wife's garden planted, mow the lawn...those kind of things....and yet, I know that I will be spinning tunes at some point today. If I could get paid to do that I would be a rich man...well, in truth, I am blessed and I am a rich man just not in money.I felt like a little sunshine popsike...and it should be a sunny day around here.I picked this one up in the last few months. Capitol records put out quite a few 45s like this in the late 60's that never did anything but are wonderful blissful releases.

Little Curtis & The Blues - Please Keep Me / Soul Desire

Here is a massive find in one of my recent big buys. What a fantastic soul slice on the old 45 slab. How did this not get picked up by a major label for bigger distribution?

Jimmy Buffett- Pacing The Cage

This blog is truly a labor of love. Sometimes I am sparse with commentary and other times I get a bit wordy. There was a time where I just ignored the blog due to obligations, time restraints, ect. I have always loved early mornings and it just made sense to start posting them in the mornings. And we should do things that we enjoy as life is so short. I learned yesterday a colleague I worked with for over 20 years died last week. I had not talked to her in years and I am filled with sadness and melancholy. Her funeral is tomorrow and my inital thought was not to go...too much pain and just want to go with denial. But It is in times like this that we need to stand up and face the painful feelings and not bury it so I  will go, to honor the memories and give the respect to her. Jimmy Buffett's version of the Bruce Cockburn classic seems to fit the emotional need I have this morning.

Flying Circus - Old Enough

I found a copy of their debut LP and this was the standout track in my mind. Took me a while to find this mellow early 1970's 45. It should have fit well on the radio at that time but did not. I managed to pick up this Canadian copy five years ago. I have found other US copies of this groups 45s but have never found a copy of this one

The Boys - (Baby) It's You

Powerpop Tuesday with a Titan 45. I was lucky to pick some of the Titan 45s up last few years inexpensively. I was telling my friend Craig about them and for Christmas 2 years ago he sent me a promo Numero group CD sampler for the Titan record label. While the CD is fantastic, there is nothing like the OG. I picked this one up in March and I wish it only cost me $1.

The Crossfires - One Potato, Two Potato / That'll Be The Day

A nice rarity to start out the work week. Hard to find Pre-Turtles.

Teenage Fan Club - God Knows It's True

Could this be a modern classic?I would present arguments that the 1st 2 Teenage Fan Club 45s on Matador are modern classics.  If you follow this blog because of the 60's music I post you may have never heard this. If you follow it because of the powerpop/indie/punk 45s you probably do. I remember my friend Craig playing me the 1st Teenage Fanclub LP on Matador when it was released and I immediately took all my pennies and bought a vinyl copy which I still have. This brilliance latter led to Bandwagonesque which Is also a classic.

The United Travel Service - Wind and Stone / Drummer of Your Mind

Here is one of the bangers from last Saturday's buy. That first box had a bunch of obscure 60's artists from the Washington state area and looking at stuff like this is what helped me take the plunge. Too bad the rest of the boxes were not full to the brim with this stuff but I guess I should feel blessed and not be greedy. I put in the Laurie sleeve considering Rust was an subsiderary of Laurie Records

Patrice Holloway - Stolen Hours

I wrote how I recently picked up 45s from a closed 1972 record store. I organized the old junk room with shelves and put the 45s on the shelves and started going through them again. In the middle of a bunch of old country boppers was this banger. How the H E double LL did I miss this the first time I went through the boxes. Crazy

Joey Wilson- Hold On Girl

I am reflecting on some of the recent posts. For instance, yesterdays post was from a Philadelphia label and I recently purchased a book on Philadelphia record labels. I didn't realize that it was in it until after my post. I usually am very observant but not this time. Or how about the Mission of Burma 45 was released in 1982..I was probably listening to some type of Loverboy crap at that time as I would have had no avenue to ever hear something like Mission of Burma at that time..and I probably would not have liked it. When I would go to the record stores in Colorado Springs I never ventured past the top 40. However, starting when I discovered REM and U2 in 1983 I started venturing ouI the normal radio crap. I remember a record store in the mall had the top 100 45 list and I remember buying REM's South Cetnral Rain with Picture sleeve as it was in the top 100 but still not a big hit. Today's post is from 1980 and it was never played on the radio where I lived. It was one of the first releases on Modern and predates any Stevie Nicks releases. I previously wrote how I picked up his LP during the big 2021 LP buy and thought it was fantastic. I read that Joey had a live kickass group and was working on new material when he died in 1997. I wonder if there is any unrleased material. Would be nice if some label like Light in the Attic or Omnivore reissued this and tried to find out about any unrleased material. I picked this one up in via mail order the past 6 months and when it arrived it had a big warp. I managed to dewarp it enough to play.

Terry Star & The Starbells- My Mama Said It's Alright

That girl sound that I like so well! I picked this up over the past few months

Mission of Burma - Trem Two / Okay/No Way

I remember when Ryko reissued some Mission of Burma in the late 90's. I didn't buy the records but I did pick up a promo cassette which I still have. I do have a wonderful avant garde LP from Bridsongs of the Mesozoic, which was another band that Roger Miller, leader of Mission of Burma was in. A few of their 45s are on my want list so I was happy to pick up recently this first pressing via mailorder inexpensively. But when I put it on the turntable this weekend I was horrified that it was wavy. If you notice in the picture, the opening is not standard but more oblong. Luckily, I was able to position it at an upper edge and it played great...trajedy averted.

The Surfaris - Dune Buggy/Boss Barracuda

I had a Ford Mustang when I was in high school and in college. I had a girlfriend in high school that was partial to Barracuda's. I do like this Barracuda.

Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats- Rocket 88

Sunday Classic: I did an imprompt buy yesterday. The story is I knew of a place a few months ago that that had a large amount of 45s but I never went. It was 2 hours away and he was only open 1 day during the week. The guy offered them cheap this last week and by the time I messaged him they were gone. Well a guy I know bought them and he showed them to me yesterday and boy did I screw up not going and looking at them a few months ago..big time mistake. So, I left his house and I remembered seeing another person who had a large amount and it was a bit expensive but it was close. So I contacted him and went and looked...did not want to make the same mistake. Well, the first box I looked in was full of bangers so I ended up negotiating with him and ended up with probably 7000 45s. Now alot of them are junk that are pretty worn but I pulled out a huge amount of bangers that I look forward to listening to.

I don't know which reissue version this is and I believe I also have a later pressing as well but not in my database and not sure which box it is in. I most definately consider this a Sunday Classic.

The Purple Gang - Bring Your Own Self Down / One Of The Bunch

I didn't sleep well last night so Cooper and I were up at 4:30am for a walk. Now in the record emporium planning the day and thinking of what I will record today (after some yard work of course. But in the meantime, here is a really nice double sided slice of pleasure for the ears that I have had for many years (hey that rhymes)
