Trends - No One There

#13
I've had a shake up in my countdown. I've been listening to the 45's I have copied and several have grown on me so much that they bounced the previous #12 and #13 from the list. Here is a sweet soul 45 that I have no clue why it died a quick death...should have been all over the radio.

Steps Of Stone - One Man's Dream & Keep Away From Me

#14
Another obscure track representing the state of North Carolina. I have been unable to find any reference to this 45. I have no clue what year, ect...any information would be greatly appreciated. The "A" side is a bit moody and the "B" side has some good crude lo fi guitar.

The Electras - Darling, I Love You

#15
The lists first North Carolina 45 (first huh, does that mean there could possibly be more?). I was recently told an estimate of 500-1000 was the pressing run for JCP's. I don't know if that was true but they are ellusive.

Lee Moses- Bad Girl (Part 1)

#16
Musicor is one of the labels I could never figure out. Teen pop, soul, Teddy & the Pandas rock, and a whole bunch of uninspiring country singles mingled in (except that some of the George Jones stuff is pretty damn good). I think it is safe to say I usually cringe when I see a Musicor label. Their were 6 or 7 Musicor 45's in this buy: several soul including this one, several Teddy/Pandas, and some mediocre country. When I pulled this one out, I had a good feeling it would be killer and I was not disappointed.

Larry Cappel - River Of Soul

#17
I love discovering obscure gems. Wonder how part 2 went?

The Seeds - The Wind Blows Her Hair

#18
Every 45 the Seeds released were brilliant. I find the "lead vocal Sky Saxon" on the label humerous. After all, they already had put out 5 45's before this one. I always thought their picture sleeves were fantastic and have all of them but the Mr. Farmer sleeve. I thought I had scored the Mr. Farmer sleeve at a record show a few years back for 1 buck but after picking it up I realized why it was a buck...only 1 side. Maybe someday.

Popsicles - I Don't Want To Be Your Baby Anymore

#19
I read somewhere that this was an Ellie Greenwich demo that was put on GNP Crescendo.

In my dream, she is actually in the studio with the Sky Saxon and the Seeds as her backing band. Ellie explains to Sky how she wants it to sound and he turns, looks at his band, and says, "You heard the bird, it's her song".  He later asks her out, she spurns him...in his dispair he writes "Can't Seem To Make You Mine."

Rockin Berries - You're My Girl

#20
I read that Kim Fowley encouraged The Rockin Berries to record He's In Town, a Goffin-King song (previously featured in my blog). I love Mr. Fowley's radio show on the Underground Garage and I am constantly amazed at how much of the music I love that he had his fingers in. I will probably have to have a Kim Fowley week at some point

Baroques - Mary Jane & Iowa, A Girl's Name

#21
The first double sider in of the list.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Gladys King - I Can't Get Over You

#22
Another sweet obscure soul 45.

Wailers - Mashi

#23
This raver moved up and down on my list but felt natural on my old surf music night of Monday.

Vagrants - I Can't Make A Friend

#25
I was up bright early (well, out the door at 5am and it was not bright but it was early) to hit the road for records. Had a long drive but ended up with a good haul today of about 80 45's. Was a little disappointed in my favorite store. I had not been there in about 3 years (thanks to school) and he did not have as many 45 as he usually does.
I had narrowed my selection down to 25 last night. So I was thinking on the drive home about the blog. Why not do a top 25, just like the college football coaches poll. The top 5 to 10 of this list is pretty set in my mind and not so set for the other 15. The list contains pricey pricey 45's and cheapies but was organized by what struck my fancy. So here goes #25

Passionettes - Sister Watch Yourself

My initial thought was to do a top 40 count down starting tomorrow night but quite frankly that was way 2 ambitious. I really have not had an opportunity to listen or check out the whole collection and 40 straight nights...please. 20 may be ambitious enough.

To celebrate my vacation, I'm hitting one of my favorite shops in the whole wide world tomrorrow (sorry, it's SECRET). Have not been there in about 3 years because it is a bit of a drive, but I always find such amazing things there cheap. Oh, if I could be independently wealthy!

Ok Kids, I finished my last paper last night and uploaded it so except for some blackboard posts I need to do school is over for the summer. You know what that means, dont you? Time to post the best of the 3,000 45 find and that will start tomorrow night. Now it is up to you regarding if I do a top 10 or a top 20. Post a comment until 7pm tomorrow night.

The Others - My Friend The Wizard

There is a little indoor flea market at the edge of town. I go there about 1x per month as they have never had any records before. Until today that is. I walked in a there were 3 big boxes of lp's right as you walk in. I ended up buying 27 lp's in pretty nice condition for fifty cents a piece. Some nice Donovan, Marvelettes, the 1st Electric Prunes. The woman that had them told me she has several big boxes of 45's in her closet (soul-James Brown, etc) but just can't part with them. Gave her my number just in case she changes her mind.
I really need to replace my turntable needle before I do any more recording. I have an extra cartridge but the screws in my current cartridge are too short. I have searched stores for little screws so I had to order some on the internet yesterday. Ordered a back up cartridge as well. Also read an article and watched some videos on steam cleaning records. Weird but I think I may give it a try. Here is a nice popsike 45. Unfortunately, the stock copy below is badly warped.

Minitmen - Smokin In The Boys Room

Found a few lp's today but nothing special. I was real bummed though. One yard sale had some lp's and there was a copy of Eden's Children on ABC but no lp, and also had a copy of the Troggs Love Is All Around LP beat to hell. Those would have been nice finds. Here is a garage rocker uncharacteristically on the Rust label

Nancy Sinatra - Last of the Secret Agents

I hear this song on the underground garage xm radio station every once in a while. It has grown on me

The Ventures - Comin Home Baby

For some unknown reason I could not upload anything to divishare over the past few days. I wonder if they do that to encourage people to shell out $ rather than freebees like me. Anyway, managed to upload tonight and did several for this week just in case.
Had  request in the recent past for more surf instrumentals...here you go......stay tuned for the top 10 of the recent score. I spent some time recording some songs yesterday...it's going to be good....once I can determine my top 10 faves.
