Sagittarius & The Impact My World Fell Down

Another Saturday double feature. My World Fell Down is a brilliant slice of pop music. Gary Usher, a songwriter tried to get Chad & Jeremy to record this but they turned it down. He brought together some top studio musicians to record this (Glen Campbell and Bruce Johnston are the lead singers on this). Later Curt Boetcher joined in to work on the album. The song made #70 on the charts. As you can see, I have a promo copy, a stock copy, and a version from Canada. The Impact later did a nice version as well. I picked it up about a month ago.

Love the lady soul singers and this 45 is a nice Northern Soul rarity. I don't know much about Suzy Wallis, but I do love this song.

Pozo Seco Singers I Can Make It With You & Come A Little Bit Closer

Don Williams is a well-known country artist. However, he started out in a 60's Texas band that put out a few 45s' with this one being my favorite. This was a minor hit in the mid 60's.

American Beetles It's My Last Night In Town

What a 45! I have several from this group but this is by far the best one. I hear a bit of Beach Boys influence. Sorry about the less than optimal sound but sometimes the G+ 45 is the best you can do.

Exiles Church St Soul Revival

Last week I uploaded the Tommy James version. I thought this week I would upload the cover version. I believe this was late 69 or early 1970.

Mickey's Monkey Triple Play

Thursday I put the b side for the Playboys of Edinburg. I thought it would fun to put the "a" side up, a nice version of the Miracles "Mickey's Monkey". And another Columbia group put out a version as well. Might as well make this a triple play with a cool video of the original classic.

Playboys Of Edinburg - Sanford Ringleton V Of Abernathy

Oh look...another Columbia records 45. Again, I know little about this band but they put out some very nice 45s in the 60s.

Gospel Night: Tommy James Church Street Soul Revival

I have always loved Tommy James and the Shondells. And it is a crying shame that they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame, er Fame. Until artists other 60's artists like Tommy James get in the HOF, it WILL be a HOS. Whew, I'm fired up..I was about to get really negative but then I remembered its gospel Sunday. I'd rather rejoice than spit hate! Tommy has a biography out and I would love to read it soon. He had a notorious drug habit in the late 60's but became clean as well as a Christian. He has written some wonderful uplifting spiritual songs in the early 70s. I believe this was late 69 or early 1970.  I believe it was previously issued as a B side to a TJ and the Shondells 45.

Liverpool Set - Seventeen Tears To The End & Change Your Mind

As if you can't tell, I have a thing for "Columbia" records. So, I thought I would end the week with another one. There were a ton of Columbia records 45s that were so great and I can just about guarantee that you will see a bunch more from me. Another group I know nothing about but it is a killer 2 sider.

Regina - If You're Gonna Love Me

A nice Soul Friday effort from Regina. It also has a 60's girl group Phil Spector type of sound so who knows if I have catagorized it correctly. All I know is that I like what I hear on this Columbia release.

NRBQ - C'Mon Everybody

There was this huge flea market type of dump..er, I mean store in Goldsboro when I moved here 16 years ago. I went in a few times but it was musty and nasty and they had a huge area with albums but the albums were mostly beat to hell. I don't remember ever finding anything there and eventually forgot about it. Well, cut to about 5 years ago. I went downtown for something and it was obviously boarded up and about to fall apart. This guy was out front with the door cracked and as I walked by he said he had good deals inside. He said he had purchased the rights to the building as it was condemned and was to be torn down. But after he bought the rights, the City would not let him get anything out due to the heath danger and the fact the place was about to crumble. I asked "Are there any records?" He replied yes come on in. Ok, the place smells of mold, you can see sky in places when you peer in, there is water dripping and beams and some of the roof is on the floor. You are a hard core record junky, what do you do? That's right you justify "it's not really that dangerous" and you go in. Anyway, there were tons of lps that were soaking in a nice soup. I was disappointed and thinking I was probably going to contract some lung disease until I found in a dry spot a box of 45's and 60's promos to boot. Now many of them had some mold on the labels and needed to be cleaned. I ended up buying about 50 of them and then went back the next day and bought the rest. I even braved going deeper into the structure searching for more but to no avail. The city got wind of his dealings afterwards and made sure the poor fellow stayed out of the building until they demolished it. The poor guy did not get to salvage much but I got this way cool early NRBQ 45.

Think - California (Is Getting So Heavy)

Hmmm....a Tuesday night heavy. I heard this 4 to 5 years ago on an online radio station 3WK (great station). I was able to luck into a copy not long afterwards. Another unknown group on Columbia records from the late 60's.

Tim Tam And The Turn Ons surf 45 Ophelia

A Detroit band. I believe "Wait A Minute" was the "A" side but I think "Ophelia" is the prize...a real nice surf instrumental. Wait A Minute is a nice soul doo wop sounding song with some goofy A** lyrics but it does draw you in. I found a youtube video of it (which is great..it saves my divishare storage for other songs!)

Kinks God's Children

You can mark the Kinks down as one of my favorite bands. An elusive white label promo 45 (as are most 60's and early 70's Kinks 45's). A surprising choice for Gospel Sunday perhaps but it has a good message. Way to go Ray!

Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23

From reviewing wikipedia (via a biography on Allmusic by Ed Hogan), Otis is a pretty amazing guy. He is the son of Johnny Otis and he began performing professionally at the age of twelve. He is a guitarist who also plays piano, organ, drums, and bass. In 1969 Al Kooper asked Otis to play on the second installment of the Super Session album. Kooper and the then-fifteen-year-old Otis recorded the album Kooper Session over one weekend. He also appeared with his father and with singer Mighty Mouth Evans on the album Cold Shot, released in 1969 on Kent Records. He released his first solo album in 1970. He also recorded with several other artists such as Frank Zappa (Otis plays electric bass on "Peaches en Regalia" on Zappa's 1969 Hot Rats), Cal Tjader, Etta James, Eddie Vinson, and more recently Mos Def and Beyonce.

Searchers When You Walk In The Room

Killer British invasion 45 with the Searchers doing the fine Jackie DeShannon classic. This made only #35 in the charts but I happen to think it is one of the finest of the invasion singles. Jackie had scored a #99 hit with this a few years earlier. I recently found a copy of her version in one of my boxes of 45's that I did not even know I had. Sweet! So to celebrate that, I found us a nice youtube video of Jackie singing it and found some other Searchers videos as well. What a great group!

Dick Monda The Wandering Carpenter

Sunday night gospel with Dick Monda. He put several 45's in the 60's on the Verve label, including this 45, the "B" Side to the "Bible Salesman" 45 (a future post). There is little information on him out there. I've seen the LP this came from so I do know an LP was released. He is best known for an awlful song that does not even feature his name. He was the voice behind the song "Chick A Boom" by Daddy Dewdrop

Hoppi and the Beau Heems Laurie Records Florida Garage

Saturday Night double feature for the start of May. I know little about this group other than they were from Florida. Laurie Records signed quite a few Florida bands...The Royal Guardsmen, The Procter Amusement Company, The Tropics, and Hoppi and the Beau Heems. Both singles are quite good with "When I Get Home" reminding me of the Doors.
