First music I've ever heard from my birth town Tarborro. My parents (& I upon my early 50's birth) only lived there for 2 years, and I only ever visited it once 20 years hence. Enjoyed both sides this morning from across the country here in central CA. Never knew area code 919 extended into coastal VA. Cheers...
Thank you for your comment. My area code is 919 so I suspect that the zip is for Eastern NC...Tarborro is about 40 miles or so away from where I live
Oh I just assumed the phone # was for Pinewood Records in Chesapeake, which is just south of Norfolk. Tho now I think you're right; it's for the band's manager/booking agent. Tho depending on when the 45 was released, area codes covered alot of geographical area in the 50s & 60s, plus until early 1952 you still had to use the operator to make long distance calls. And speaking of ancient customs, are you old enough to remember "party lines", where neighbors shared the same phone #? Heh...
I grew up in Raleigh & didn't move across country til late 1978. One of the things I love about your blog are the NC music posts. Many of my best friends from my early teens onward were musicians. One band I closely hung out with as sorta their equipment guy/half-ass mgr had Jimmy Capps (JCP) son Jimbo as its lead singer.
Please tell me more...what was the bannd you hung out with and what was Jimbo's band? I collect the JCP label and have quite a few. I sold a few of the hardest to find to a friend of mine and those items helped him complete the full collection of known releases. My friend is loosly putting together a book (not sure if he will publish) but it is going to be amazing when he is finished...I may need to hook you up with him
