My feeble attempt at documenting my record collection and music obsession.

The Brains - Money Changes Everything
The album this came from is fantastic. Cyndi Lauper later covered this and had a sizeable hit with it. I will definately feature a deep cut from this alubum if I ever get around to doing deep album cuts on this blog (like I have considered)

J. Geils Band - I Don't Need You No More / Dead Presidents
I started to really appreciate J. Geils Band about 5 years ago and have slowly been picking up their records. I picked up a bunch of their 80's output with picture sleeves during the Wilmington buy. I bought their Freeze Frame LP brand new when it was released but now recognize it's the 70's records that are happening. Still looking for their 1st 45 but I know it will come at some point. But for now we have this one that includes the classic version of the Willie Dixon song

Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
I am thinking mellow is good for this Sunday morning. I am thinking fondly of this record store in Ft. Collins Colorado (the Finest Records) that no longer exists. I was a broke college student and pretty much spent every cent I had there (or at goodwill). I remember one time they had this 12" single Blue Flower from Mazzy Star from their 1st lp. I never bought it...now I am still chasing it. I found a copy of their 1st CD at a goodwill when visiting my friend Craig in Maryland in 2014 for a buck. I've missed on this one over the years but finally snagged a cheap copy a few months back. We lost David Roback in 2020.

Chubby Checker - Karate Monkey
Don't you love it when you get more record packages in the mail than pieces of mail itself. Don't you love it when another want list item is removed from the list. I first heard this on underground radio not from Chubby but from The Woggles doing a cover version. This 45 seems to be in demand and in all my years of seeing Chubby Checker 45's this is the first time I have ever seen this one. I rooted around in the sleeve box to locate a really nice parkway sleeve and oh does it look sweet!

Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians- Balloon Man
I was in contact with someone a few weeks back and we discussed a record store (The Finest Records) that was in Ft. Collins and Greeley Colorado and is now closed. That got me to thinking about all the great records I bought there including the Promo 12" green vinyl copy of Balloon man . I believe I bought the US 45 with picture sleeve at Wax Trax in Denver and know I picked up the promo 45 in a mail order auction last year. I first heard Robyn when I worked nights at a group home in college and would have the local college radio station on to help me stay awake. I have a pretty big collection of his items and he is a GEM of an artist that has pretty much gone under the radar. I was fortuntae to see him live at a small club in Denver back in 1990 or so. Someday I hope to see him again

Lou Christie - If My Car Could Only Talk
If I would have realized Lou's birthday was yesterday I would have uploaded this then. So, Happy 81st Birthday Lou. I'm excited about this post as this is one of those bangers that has been on my want list for years and I finally picked up a copy with the stock 45. Matter of fact, I bought the promo from the same person along with a few other early 60's promo Lou's. I had purchased the 45's first and then messaged the person asking them if they had any picture sleeves from Lou. He had this one and the price was incredible (good) so of course it was a YES YES YES. I already had the stock copy of the 45 and I believe I have a promo copy somewhere not in my very behind database. I don't understand why this was not a hit. It had everything that we have come to love from Lou. And I also don't understand why this picture sleeve is so expensive when the rest of his are very reasonable. I am pretty sure I am going to overdo the Lou Christie 45's on this blog in the near future as I am so enjoying rediscovering him. I also read that his lost Columbia recordings are being released I believe this week. I have his Columbia 45s and I think I need to relisten to them as I am pretty sure I am going to buy the lost LP

The Trade WInds - Summertime Girl
I had the opportunity to record a few dozen 45s yesterday. This is a recent pickup. I have found a new online place to buy records and it good and bad. The good is experienced sellers but the bad are people selling records that don't know how to grade them and don't know anything about them or how to package them. I bought one with this one that the seller said was mint and boy was it trashed. The other one was not an expensive 45 and did not cost me much so that was good. This one has lots of wear but it was one I had never seen before. I had previously uploaded one of their songs but now realize I have never uploaded their minor hit, which is killer by the way. Guess I will have to recitify that soon. Bit I thought this one fit with Monday Summer Surf althought it might have fit on a soul night as it is very soulful

The County Agents - Good Morning Mr. Davies / Would I Lie
Obscure Texas label. A few on this label are worth big bucks but of course I don't have those. B side on this one is probably the best side

The Rev-Lons - Boy Trouble
Friday Soul day becomes Friday Girl/Teen day as I need to start recording 45's again. The first time I heard this on the Underground Garage it went on my want list. Finally picked it up in December. Great girl sound on Gary Paxton's label and you know how I love these girl sound 45's. I also picked up an import Rev-Lons 45 with picture sleeve over the past month or so.

Bob Seger - Get Out Of Denver
This is exactly what I did recently. I flew into Denver as Mom was having a medical procedure. I had checked out the weather a few days before and it was supposed to be nice. Of course unpredictable Colorado weather came into play as I flew into Denver International in a snow storm. I had planned on hitting record stores on the way out of town but the car rental lady told me Colorado Springs was supposed to get 8 inches of snow. So I slowly made my way to moms- a usually 2 hour drive but not this day. The roads were horrible with Amazon and Walmart semi trucks stuck in the middle of the highway. But I made it to the Springs and hit a few record stores there. Over that week I saw friends and family, took care of Mom, played with the grandkids and hit some more record shops. I also found out that my favorite record store in Colorado Springs closed. It seems each time I go home I find great record stores I loved when I lived in Denver have closed. The places I used to go get 45's are no longer there. One place told me that his dad had started the store and liked 45's but now that he runs the store he has gotten rid of them as not many people shop for them. I know that alot of record collectors hate 45s but quite frustrating to those of us who know. But I did find a few new ones in Colorado Springs that had some KILLER items that I had to mail home. The day I left for Denver was another damn snow storm and the Springs was awful but it was better once I got to Denver. Hit the usualy shops (Wax Trax, Twist and Shout, Black & Read) and found more killer stuff that I am having my son mail to me.
I saw Bob Seger live in Denver when I was an undergraduate at Colorado State University. The concert was at the old McNichols Arena which is where the Denver Nuggets played. We were in the nosebleed section then after the concert we drove back to Ft. Collins and decided to climb Horsehoe Rock. We climbed to the top then back down. I had just enough time to shower before going to work. These days if I stay awake to watch a late night football game (damn East Coast Time) I am completely worthless the next day. After I graduated with my undergraduate, I moved to a suburb of Denver. I eventually did Get Out Of Denver permanately- moving to North Carolina in October 1994

The Teardrops - Welcome Back Kotter
Last Laurie Spotlight for awhile- I'm not sure who thought releasing this was a good idea considering John Sebastian had a #1 hit with it. I do like it though.

The Red Coats - The Dum Dum Song
Our Laurie spotlight continues with a bit a little British invasion / Herman's Hermits sounding 45. I believe this group morphed into the Sidekicks, a group that had a little success on the RCA label

The Girl- Getters - Girl Getters / I'm Getting Tired
No upload yesterday as I was traveling and returned home...more on that later. And then staying up late watching the bowl...classic game.
Laurie spotlight on a nice poppy garagey sounding 45. I liked both sides and I believe the I'm Getting Tired might have been considered as the A side while this promo label has the star on the Girl Getters side

Jimmy Curtiss - Psychedelic Situation
Laurie Spotlight. Jimmy Curtiss had quite a career in numerous groups but I don't think he had much success other than writing commercial jingles. I always liked his work in The Hobbits on Decca (posted a Hobbits 45 in 2014- alas, old mp3 server). Looks like he passed away in February 2022

The Charmers - Shy Guy
Laurie girl group/soul /doo wop spotlight on another song from The Charmers. Discographies I have seen show this as the b side but I thought it was the superior side and this copy has a star on the label. Another not easy 45 to find and yes, an Audition Release. I always thought the Audition Release font on these 45s were cool. This one comes with the harder to find purple Laurie sleeve. Another Van McCoy song

The Muffetts - Lost / Heather Girl
Laurie Spotlight. Here is an odd one on Laurie because of the release number 4560. Most Laurie 45's are in the 3000...with this exception and also I know of some releases that started with TL and in single and double digits. This was originally released on Counterpoint Records

Lee And The Leopards - Come Into My Palace / Trying To Make It
Laurie Spotlight on Lee And The Leopards- a nice double sided early 1960's sound. I am not sure if this version or the Gordy records version were released first..I may have it on Gordy but it is not in my database
