I LOVE the Peacocok label, especially the gospel division of the label. I have probably said that a ton of times but I don't think I can say it enough. That first Reverend Cleophus Robinson set me on the Peacock path and I take a chance on everything. Usually they are beat to you know what but recently I found some old store stock. I did not buy all of them but the next time I meet up with that person I will buy the rest
My feeble attempt at documenting my record collection and music obsession.

Earl Grant - Hide Nor Hair
I have found plenty of Earl Grant and was quite surprised that I had this one in one of my boxes. I pays to periodically go back through to see what you overlooked
Finally added Cooper's picture. For some reason Bentley's picture disappeared (which made me sad)...but Bentley would have wanted Cooper posted. It took me awhile to figure out how to get him up there.

Sam Cooke - Just For You / Made For Me
How was this not a hit? It has that classic Sam vocal style that I so love. Sam put this out on his own label in November 1961 and it did not hit the charts. His next single would be a big one in January 1962 (Twistin The Night Away).. I picked this up in the March buy that was full of old store stock and it looks dang near perfect

Jorma Kaukonen with Tom Hobson - Genesis / I Am The Light Of This World
Wednesday deep Album Cut(s). Years ago I was watching the Johnny Depp movie Transcendence and the song Genesis opened the movie. I had never heard it before and was just mesmerized by it. When I looked it up and I saw the cover I was like, "I have that damn LP.". It was in a box of lp's a friend gave me and I had never even looked at it. I didn't even know who the artist was. I love the old Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna releases and was suprised this was Jorma's 1st LP. Needless to say it has been a faviorite of mine once it graced my turntable that day. When the record store day version came out I snagged a copy as seen on the color vinyl. I doubt it would have been a hit single but Genesis is just absolutley brilliant. And I am the Light of This World is a classic cover version that Jorma makes his own...it would fit nicely in my upcoming covers week if I had not decided to jump the gun and include it here as a twoferl

R.E.M. Sitting Still
This 45 caused me a bit of anxiety last week. R.E.M. were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and CBS Morning did a 2 day interview with the band. The band played Losing My Religion at the awards show for the first time in years and I admit that is not one of my favorites. I understand why they played it but to me those IRS releases are magic. I became a huge R.E.M. fan when they started and the first thing I found was a promo Radio Free Europe 45 at this little record store I would visit in Colorado Springs. I have a huge collection of 45s 12" singles, lp's cd's,, bootleg lp's including the Finest Lunchbox rarity etc. I tracked down all the IRS 12" singles when I lived in Denver. I had planned this as a post about 6 months ago and like an idiot, I pulled the 45 from the box it was in and put it in another box that I had set aside to record some 45s. Life gets busy and I had not gotten around to recording it. The CBS show inspired me to record it...only it was not in the box..what????..not in the box???? I looked in the box listed in my database and no go. I searched and searched and searched and searched, and the longer I searched the more anxious I became. I bought this at a Denver record show back in the early 1990's and it was something I thought I would never get and now it's missing. Well I knew it had to be somewhere here in this crazy collection of mine. I finally found it this weekend in another box...sheesh, sometimes I don't know what I am thinking when I haphazardly move things around. Anyway, I have always loved Sitting Still and feel it deserves a post.

The Knight Brothers - Love (Can't You Hear Me)/ Margaret
Friday Soul with The Knight Brothers. Picked this up in the buy a few weeks ago. Vinyl has lots of scuffs and scratches but is still a brilliant slice of 60's soul heaven.

The Devilles - Joan Of Love
I love digging in the boxes and pulling out gems. First off you have the killer label. When I am crate digging I will always pick up things that look like this whether I know anything about it or not. A label like this dares me to take a listen. Then cleaning it up and popping it on the turntable and in this case you get a fantastic doo wop song. Killer labels don't always mean a home run but in this case it does in my opinion. A friend told me this weekend that I am a rarity with the wide variety of music styles I love. That may or may not be true. I try not to be an elitest or know it all. I also try to respect the tastes of others but that is not always easy. I have another friend who is so focused on classic rock and heavy metal that he ignores brilliant records. He recently gave me 100's of classic R&B and oldies lp's becuase they just were not something he was interested in. How could you not want to listen to an original copy of the Cricket's first album! I do find it difficult when people are so focused on what they like that they ignore brilliant pieces of work all around them. Oh my, I think I need more coffee as that was too heavy a rant for a Tuesday Morning..

One Way Street - Tears In My Eyes/I See The LIght
Recently I was buying some records in an online auction. The person had this 45 but told me it was trashed and would not sell it and was going to throw it away. I asked them to toss it in my package and they obliged. It is pretty beat up but after a good scrubbing (including the HumminGuru), I thought it played rather nicely considering the scuffs and scratches. How many times do you get a huge rarity for free
